The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has failed to curb the practice of dumping garbage in open drains by slum dwellers. With monsoon fast approaching, clogged drains are sure to create havoc once it starts raining. Officials fear that unless the slum dwellers stop dumping garbage, the city may witness severe flooding in several areas. After a lot of hue and cry, the civic body has now decided to supply tricycles in every slum where the major drains are situated for door-to-door collection of garbage. "Efforts by the corporation officials to create awareness among the slum dwellers about the problem that arise due to garbage dumping have proved futile. Door-to-door garbage collection is the best available solution in the rainy season as we cannot take chances," an official said. In addition to the tricycles, the officials have also decided to place garbage bins at various points near the drains. Local residents who fail to dump their garbage in the tricycle, can dispose it in the bins. The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation commissioner, Dr C.V.S.K Sarma, has issued instructions to the contractors to speed up the process of desilting the drains and employ more labourers to complete the work within a week. Dr Sarma along with senior officials inspected the desilting work at all the chronic stagnation points at Balkapur, Ahmednagar, Hakeempet, Langar Houz, Katora Houz and Shatam Tank that falls in the jurisdiction of the central zone. During the inspection, the officials noticed that the local residents of Balkapur Nala and other areas were dumping garbage in the drains. The officials appealed to the residents to stop the practice as tricycles and garbage bins would be provided to them at feasible points. The GHMC chief further instructed the officials to display caution boards in three to four languages to prevent people from entering the danger zone and slipping into the nalas when it rains.
