A notification declaring the entire Gir forest and sanctuary as a national park has become a bone of contention between the state government and thousands of forest settlers, who will be rendered homeless once the notification becomes applicable and will have to leave the jungle which has been their home for several years. Following directions from the Supreme Court, district collector Pankaj Joshi issued a notification in this regard in January and March 6 was declared the last day for filing any objections to the proposal.
