The Narmada Control Authority (NCA) has cleared an increase in the Narmada dam height from 110.64 metres to 121.92 metres, an elated Gujarat government began construction at the site, virtually within minutes of the announcement. The excitement has been short-lived, however, with Minister for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz now saying that the Review Committee of the Narmada Control Authority (RCNCA) will reconsider the decision. The Supreme Court has mandated that the rehabilitation of people displaced by the increased height needs to be ensured before clearance is granted. In 2004, when the dam height had been increased to 110.4 m, the Madhya Pradesh CM had sent a letter to the Centre assuring it of proper rehabilitation. There has been no such letter this time around.
