PANAJI: The Goa government on Wednesday opposed the Coastal Management Zone (CMZ) draft notification issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and sought the intervention of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to convene a meeting of Chief Ministers to deliberate on the various aspects of the proposed notification.
Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday after attending a meeting of leaders of all political parties of the State, at which a presentation was made on the proposed CMZ, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said there was consensus among all the political parities that the notification in its present form would be detrimental to the interests of the coastal State of Goa.
This is the view also taken by various organisations that have petitioned the State government opposing the notification, which is expected to supersede the existing Costal Regulation Zone Notification of 1991. Mr. Kamat said he had already broached the issue of the notification with some of the Chief Ministers, who also agreed that it needed to be discussed by Chief Ministers of the coastal States. He said that the apprehension was that the powers of the State with regard to development in the coastal areas would be withdrawn and entirely taken over by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.
