Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has suggested to the authorities of Kaziranga National Park to keep the centenary park open to tourists round the year. The Chief Minister revealed this during his brief sojourn at Mou Chapori, a holiday spot in the middle of the Brahmaputra river, on Tuesday. Gogoi, who was impressed by the tourism potential at the river resort, is understood to have called for the introduction of boats and other special services so that the tourists can revel in the sights and sounds of the national park even during the rainy season. At present there is a monsoon break at KNP which lasts for more than six months. The park opens to tourists in November every year and closes after the onset of the monsoon season in late April or May. The Chief Minister stressed the need for introduction of more schemes to boost the tourism scene in the State. The unemployed youths should seek avenues of employment in the tourism sector which is a lucrative business today, he added. Gogoi advised the proprietor of Mou Chapori to display information relating to the river resort at airports and bus stands. This will attract tourists, he reasoned. Significantly, there are no snakes and mosquitoes at Mou Chapori, a sandbank, to trouble the backpackers outdoors. As the sand remains warm, serpents find the place inhospitable, informed sources pointed out. The non-existence of any stagnant pools of water in the sandbank does not promote the breeding of mosquitoes, the sources added. The Chief Minister, who was out on a Bihu trip here, enjoyed performances by troupes at the river resort and later at the children's park at Rajabari. In his second attendance, Gogoi was accompanied by Jorhat MLA Rana Goswami, Deputy Inspector General of Eatern Range LR Bishnoi, Jorhat Deputy Commissioner LS Changsan, Jorhat Superintendent of Police Deepak Choudhary and Jorhat Zilla Parishad chairman Putul Buragohain. The fun-filled Bihu function was anchored by Jorhat DIPRO Dushyanta Madhab Sarmah. The Chief Minister, who halted at his home district after returning from Itanagar where he had gone to attend the function held on the completion of the first year of the present Congress Government in Arunachal Pradesh, left this morning.
