Objections raised by the health ministry over proposals made in the National Pharmaceutical Policy 2006 resulted in the meeting of Group of Ministers (GoM), formed to deliberate the draft, ended on an inconclusive note on Wednesday. "Whatever proposals (in the policy) we have received, health ministry has a different opinion on that. The ministry feels that there can be duplication on certain provisions,' agriculture minister Sharad Pawar said after the meeting. This was the fourth meeting of the GoM held to discuss the draft policy, which is pending for two years. Pawar said the health ministry was of the opinion that proposals in the draft policy would duplicate certain provisions of a bill (Central Drug Authority Bill), which has already been introduced in Rajya Sabha. "So, we suggested that secretaries of the both the department (chemicals and fertilisers and health) should sit first and sort out wherever they feel there is duplication,' Pawar said. Asked why the health ministry was raising the issue now, on the fourth meeting and not earlier, he said: "This I don't know and it is the health ministry which should answer this.' Officials sources said the health ministry had raised objections to certain issues pertaining to drug regulator and procurement of medicines for government hospitals and health insurance, which it felt would be duplicated.
