If you think that you are adding on to your nutrition by having fish in your meals then you are wrong. Local varities of fishes available in the market are not safe for eating if we go by a study carried out by the Industrial Toxicological Research Centre (ITRC). Nearly all samples of fishes collected from the markets contian traces of mercury and lead. The prime reason for this toxicity is the growing pollution of the Gomti river. With wastes from domestic and industrial units finding their way into Gomti river, the pollution levels are on the increase day by day. For the study, samples of fishes such as Singhi, Mangur, Tengan, Belgagra, Girai and Patra were collected from the markets.
