Farmers in Gorakhpur village, protesting against the acquisition of land for a nuclear plant to be set up in the area, have constituted the Parmanoo Sanyantra Virodhi Morcha (Nuclear Plant Protest Front) to carry forward their agitation. This comes in the wake of the Kisan Sangharsh Samiti — a body formed by farmers to protest against the nuke project — formally announcing that it was ending its two-year-long agitation and submitting the same in writing to the Fatehabad Deputy Commissioner recently. The new front, led by another faction of Gorakhpur villagers, have now claimed that they will launch a massive agitation against the power plant. “We will hold meetings with villagers and convince them to launch another agitation against the nuclear plant, irrespective of whether they have accepted the compensation amount for their acquired land or not,” said Subhash Punia, district convener of the new front. On Wednesday, the members of the front will stage a day-long sit-in outside the district administration headquarters in Fatehabad. “We will pay homage to the people who lost their lives in Koodankulam, where people are protesting against setting up of the nuclear power plant. We are also in touch with certain activists, who are participating in the agitation there,” Punia added. “We are also being supported by farmers, who have accepted compensation from the state government. They have assured us that they will also be part of our agitation,” he said. Meanwhile, the state government, visibly unaffected by the new front, is surveying three villages — Gorakhpur, Badopal and Kajalheri — where the power plant is set to come up. It is expected to submit the survey reports to the district administration by September 25.
