In a bid to arrest the alarming depletion of green cover in the Tamil Nadu state, the government is contemplating a special legislation to make tree feeling a cognizable offence. The draft version, called the Tamil Nadu Preservation of Trees Bill, is awaiting final touches and is being pursued with a sense of urgency, highly placed sources in the government. Also, for the first time in the state, a census of existing trees will be carried out.
