Government uncertain over uranium mining

SHILLONG, Sept 22: The principal advisor to the Government of India (attached with the Atomic Mineral Division) VP Raja today held a series of talks with the Chief Minister Dr Donkupar Roy, the leader of the opposition DD Lapang and the Deputy Chief Minister HS Lyngdoh. According to an inside source, Raja who was accompanied by the Uranium Corporation of India Limited (UCIL) RL Gupta, informed the State leaders about the importance of the uranium deposits in West Khasi hills. So far the Meghalaya Government has not taken any decision to allow the Centre to extract the uranium deposit in Domiasiat-Pyndenkylleng area in West Khasi hills due to opposition from political parties and other social organizations in the State.
