Governor Mr Gopalkrishna Gandhi urged students of animal and fishery sciences to extend their learning to the rural areas such as the Sunderbans where primitive methods of fishing is used. The new technique that the students have will save the rare organism of the coastal waters who are killed indiscriminately due to the fishing practice of the locals. Mr Gandhi was addressing the fourth convocation of West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences in the city this morning. The Governor said the fishermen of Sunderban spend hours in water catching fishes using their hands and net. "They do so to earn their living, but unknowingly they kill many aquatic organisms, which are rarely found. Thus this leads to a loss of aquatic regeneration. However, the updated techniques of catching fish should be taught to them and the graduates of the University of Animal and Fishery Sciences should take this up,' said Mr Gandhi. He urged the students to lend their service in order to ensure income and work security of the farmers including fishermen and poultry farmers. He also said that 10 km in and out of the shore line should be protected to safe guard the aquatic life, which are becoming extinct due to urbanisation in the coastal areas. Mr Rathindra Narayan Basu, the former vice chancellor of Calcutta University and chair person of West Bengal State Agriculture Commission said the sectors of farming which involves crop farming, livestock rearing and poultry farming are treated individually, which are not properly integrated, so that wastes of one sector would serve as input materials for another sector. He invited students to implement the techniques in which the biodegradable wastes can be recycled.
