Govt admits fish drought in the state

THE state government faced the wrath of both the treasury and opposition members on the issue of fishermen's problems in the council on Tuesday. Fishing minister Anees Ahmed, while acknowledging their fears, admitted the probability of fish drought in the state. Deputy speaker Vasant Daokhare instructed the government to convene a meeting of concerned officers within next eight days to find a solution to the issue. Sanjay Dutt (Congress), through a calling attention motion, demanded declaration of a fish drought in the state. Though the farmers received a loan waiver, the fishermen got a raw deal from the state government, he said. Members cutting across party lines like Yashwantrao Gadakh, Govindrao Adik, Sanjay Kelkar, Vinod Tawde and Bhaskar Jadhav took the government to task over the plight of fishermen. Jadhav said, the average fishing ratio in the state has gone down and it is not fair to apply the obsolete 1981 act for it. Raote questioned the relevance of fishing university in Nagpur (Vidarbha) when the fishing mostly takes place in the coastal Konkan area. Ahmed, in his written answer, had denied a reduction in fish production. The current season's fish production is also not less than 50 percent of average production from last three years, he said. However, while replying the debate he acknowledged of fish drought in the state. A committee of divisional commissioners has been formed to take decision about fish drought and a demand of amendment in 1981 act will also be considered, he said.
