Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government has begun to draw up a city development plan (CDP) for Porbander following a Government of India (Gol) nod to include the birthplace of Mahatma Gandhi as a Mission City under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JN-NURM). State urban development minister Nitin Patel told TOI on Tuesday "The Gujarat government was told about the Centre's decision to include Porbander as Mission City a month ago following repeated representations from Chief Minister Narendra Modi and myself to include the historic city in the JN-NURM." The letter dated February 5,2009, sent by the Union ministry of urban development to K Srinivas, who then held additional charge of the state urban development department, stated that "a CDP and a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in respect of Porbander may be drawn up and forwarded to the ministry for further action." MoU would include commitment on the part of the state government to undertake urban reforms in Porbander, including going in for public-private partnership in urban infrastructure projects. A separate letter by Union urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy to Chief Minister Narendra Modi, dated February 24, says that once the MoU is signed up, the urban local body, Porbander municipality, can start working on detailed project reports (DPRs) in order to get JN-NURM sanctions. Patel said, "Gujarat has been able to get maximum benefit from the JNNURM compared to all other states. Our implementation rate is the highest in the country. In Porbander, too, we have been quick to act on receiving Central nod."
