Govt board to monitor pollution during Pujas

Kolkata, 11 Oct: The noise level and other environment-related parameters would be monitored by the West Bengal Pollution Control Board during the Puja festival beginning this week.
A number of teams will monitor noise pollution from microphones and crackers from 13 October till October 17 in and around Kolkata, WBPCB chairman, Prof. PN Roy, said here today.
The monitoring would be done in consultation with the High Court Monitoring Committee on Ganga Pollution and State Noise Monitoring Committee.
There would be teams at PCB regional offices like Howrah, Haldia, Hooghly, Durgapur, Asansol, Malda, Siliguri and Kankinara to monitor noise pollution, he said.
The WBPCB has also set up a dedicated team to monitor immersion of idols in Kolkata, Howrah and other parts of the state.
The WBPCB and the Environment Department have announced Serader Sera Nirmal Puja Puroskar as in previous years to encourage Puja organisers to comply with environment norms, Mr Roy said.
Chief Law Officer of the Board Mr Biswajit Mukherjee said that a meeting would be held on 26 October with the police authorities of all the districts on noise pollution during Kali Puja and Diwali festivals.
Altogether 108 cases were registered in 2008 and 88 in 2009 for flouting environment norms, Mr Mukherjee said.
