The mushrooming of unsafe buildings in cities has caught the attention of the Supreme Court. It issued notices to the Centre, DDA, MCD, Bureau of Indian Standards and a host of technical bodies today on a PIL seeking an end to construction of such structures and strict implementation of safety standards. The petition is the result of painstaking research by NGO Society for Safe Structure which described it as a homage to those who lost their lives in the 2001 Gujarat quake and the recent Tsunami.
