EXTERNAL affairs minister Pranab Mukherjee on Monday told his American hosts that the government was engaged in the process of resolving the "political problems' in the implementation of the Indo-US nuclear deal. The two sides, which resolved to work for the operationalisation of the agreement, discussed the progress in the negotiations on the deal. The government, which has concluded safeguards agreement talks with the IAEA, has broached the issue with the Left parties. The allies of the Congress, who are determined to stall the deal, will be meeting the government leadership in mid-April to discuss the IAEA agreement. But this is unlikely to throw up any resolution to the impasse. Washington, in the meanwhile, has repeated its "time is running out' message. The US is keen that the agreement reaches its Congress before it gets into the poll mode. The Americans have already told the Indian leadership that the agreement has to be put before the US Congress by June. The Indian side has one more hurdle to cross before the deal gets into that stage
