The Environment Ministry said Thursday it has set a target of reducing per capita household garbage generation, excluding recyclables, by 20% from the fiscal 2000 level to about 530 grams a day by fiscal 2015. The ministry also recommended that business operators slash garbage generation by 20% over the same period to around 14.5 million tons a year. According to the officials, household garbage generation totaled 28.21 million tons in fiscal 2005, down from 30.58 million tons in fiscal 2000. Officials said the target for households could be met by promoting recycling and public relations activities encouraging decreased garbage generation, as well as introducing paid garbage disposal services in all municipalities wishing to adopt such a system.
