Gandhinagar: The Congress on Wednesday released a politically explosive internal government note of the Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL), which says that for four long years, 2003 to 2008, the Gujarat government failed to provide Narmada water to its farmers despite huge quantity of water available for use. The letter signed by RK Tripathy, SSNNL joint managing director, accuses "certain officials of the SSNNL for working hand-in-glove with Madhya Pradesh by allowing the state's share to be diverted to the neighbouring state."
The letter says, "Instead of providing water to the state's farmers, the government sent state reserve police (SRP) to Malia, Banaskantha and Mehsana purportedly to confiscate motors being used by water thieving farmers. This continued for four long years, even as providing free water to Madhya Pradesh during the period." It adds,
'Again, during the same period, Gujarat's share of water was being used for producing electricity, 84 per cent of which was sent freely to Madhya Pradesh." Sources in Sachivalaya have confirmed the authenticity of the letter.
The letter wonders why water is being used for producing electricity from riverbed power house when Gujarat's share is negligible.
"This is happening despite fact that Saurashtra and Kutch are under shortage of drinking water. I believe that the decision not to allow water to be used by farmers, and going so far as to send SRP to confiscate pumps, or not providing drinking water, is against people's interests. I also think that all-this is being done to indirectly help Madhya Pradesh," the letter says, demanding immediate steps to reverse the unjust decision.
Official sources said, soon after the letter, dated January 27,2009, was brought to the notice of Chief Minister Narendra Modi, Tripathy was appointed managing director, SSNNL, and a decision was taken to stop producing electricity from the riverbed powerhouse. Recognising the political need of the Lok Sabha polls, water began to be diverted into the canal instead of the riverbed
