Piqued over increase in cases of flurosis in Unnao district the state government has ordered a probe into the quality of water drawn from hand-pumps in Ganga Ghat.
The decision was taken in a review meeting of the officials of the Urban Development and Environment departments which was presided over by the Urban Development Minister Nakul Dubey here on Monday.
"The quality of water should be checked on a regular basis at Ganga Ghat," the minister said. A senior official who attended the meeting told 'The Pioneer' that all of a sudden there is a spurt in the cases of flurosis in villages that come under Ganga Ghat block.
Flurosis is caused by presence of fluoride in water much more than the prescribed limit.
A check in water content was carried out almost three years back, however, then no traces of fluoride were found in the water. The increase in cases of flourosis hint at increase in fluoride in the water, official said.
Besides Ganga Ghat, the government has also ordered probe to check water quality of the sewage treatment plant in Sultanpur, the quality of effluents released from the carpet industry in Bhadohi and slaughter houses in Sultanpur.
While reviewing the working of the Urban Development Department, Dubey asked officials to implement reservation in the contract system in letter and spirit. Additional commissioners should look into the effective implementation of the reservation system and have been asked to report to higher officials if any anomaly is found in its implementation.
