Govt plans to build light rail, monorail

The government has embarked upon a light rail transit (LRT) system and monorail project. Three corridors of the LRT and monorail transit system in various parts of the city have been planned, and might be run on publicprivate partnership basis. Addressing reporters, transport minister Haroon Yusuf said that for the LRT, three corridors -MehrauliBadarpur, Meh-rauli-Dwarka and Meh-rauli-Central Secretariat -have been planned that will be 11.5 km, 17.5 km and three km in length with 10, 12 and 16 stations respectively. The total amount incurred on these stations will be Rs 6,893 crores. He said that three corridors have been planned for a monorail, which are Budh Vihar-Delhi railway station, Kalyanpuri-Kundli and Delhi University and Gulabi Bagh. These will be 28.5 km, 15.4 km and 3.8 km in length respectively and will have 24, 15 and four sta tions each. The total amount for construction will be Rs 5,738 crores. The first draft of a technical feasibility study has been prepared. The second step will be the preparation of a detailed project report that will take another five to six months. A private agency hired by the Delhi integrated multimodal transit system (DIMTS) will work on design details, investor's interest, passenger traffic on these roads and its economic viability, a DIMTS official said. The LRT will run on elevated corridors while the monorail will run on the road, along with other traffic. Wherever, the density of traffic is between 20-30,000 per hour, elevated LRT will be constructed. Monorail will constructed where there is 15-20,000 and where there is less, trams at grade will be run, which is another form of LRT. As far as the cost is concerned, the LRT will cost around Rs 15-20 crores per kilometre
