Govt plans to cut taxes on fuel-efficient cars

  • 17/02/1999

The Japan Council for Transport Policy will compile a plan in the spring for the revision of the automobile-related tax system to promote the use of fuel-efficient automobiles. By lowering taxes on fuel-efficient cars, the plan aims at encouraging drivers to buy such cars. To prevent global warming caused by automobile emissions--chiefly carbon dioxide--it is necessary to improve fuel efficiency and control traffic volume. Although more and more drivers consider fuel efficiency when buying a car, cheap gasoline means it is not a crucial factor determining their choice of vehicle, according to automobile industry sources.
