Govt plans to set up 17 more reservoirs

BHUBANESWAR: The State Government has plans to set up 17 more reservoirs as a flood control measure. At present there 8 large and 37 medium reservoirs in the State on different river systems. Besides, work on 18 more projects are on. The projects on river Mahanadi which are on progress are Lower Indra, Manjore, Ret, Titlagarh and Lower Suktel. Sources maintained that there are proposals for construction of Ong, Brutanga, Upper Lanth, Barmul, Uttei Roul, Dhauragoth, Tel, Salki and Khadago reservoirs. Work is on at Kanpur in Keonjhar district for construction of a large river dam project on Baitarani. Besides, there is a proposal for construction of another river embankment at Deo. There are proposals for setting up dam projects at Balijor and Khairibandhan in the district. Floods in Baitarani river could be checked with the completion of these projects. A multi-purpose inter state dam project on Subarnarekha river has been completed at Chandili. Besides, the State Government had spent Rs 137.25 crore during 2008-09 for strengthening and repair of embankments on different rivers. During the year 6515 kilometers long embankments were constructed.
