SHILLONG: The State Government on Thursday admitted serious crisis of water faced by the people of Shillong but termed "inappropriate" a proposal for constitution of a separate Shillong Water Board to solve the problem. PHE Minister Prestone Tynsong, while replying to a question from Independent legislator Manas Chaudhuri, however, said creation of a "Shillong Water Board" does not look "appropriate" at this moment. The PHE Minister informed that there is a shortage eight million litres of water per day to meet to the demand of the three lakh plus population in Greater Shillong area. Earlier, Manas Chaudhuri made a strong plea for setting up of an independent and exclusive authority -- the Shillong Water Board -- with all the legal powers to revamp and streamline the water supply system. He said the Board should have the sole authority and be responsible for tapping, filtering, and distributing drinking water to all the households in Greater Shillong area. Leader of the Opposition Conrad K Sangma also supported the resolution. He said a separate water board is required to address the water scarcity problem in the city. The Independent MLA's plea was on the ground that the present arrangement of multiple layers of authorities at various stages right from generation and distribution has "proved to be inadequate to the task". He pointed out that PHE was looking after the Greater Shillong Water Supply Scheme (GSWSS) and the Shillong Municipal Board was responsible for the entire distribution system. Chaudhuri said the multi-tier arrangement had failed to live up to the expectation of the people. "The situation became worse during the dry months when taps go dry and supply falls below the normal level," he added.
