The Delhi government's apathy towards thousands of children studying under testing conditions in over 200 schools run directly or aided by it came in for severe criticism from the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The SC said it was a pity that primary education in the Capital was being neglected when the governments were focusing on implementing reservations in higher education. Expressing anguish at the delay in making provision for basic amenities, a Bench comprising Justices Ashok Bhan and Dalveer Bhandari directed the Shiela Dikshit government to provide clean drinking water, fans and lights and toilets on a war footing to state-run or aided schools that have been for years getting step-motherly treatment.
