Steps have been taken to draft regulations against noise pollution caused by radios and cassette players in private buses, an official of The Western Province Passenger Transport Authority says. "A committee was formed comprising officials of the Ministry of Environment, Registrar of Motor Vehicles and Police to discuss environmental pollution caused by radios and cassette players in private buses," Chairman of The Western Province Passenger Transport Authority, Piyasena Dissanayake told The Island. He said that the approval of the Ministry of Environment would be obtained to gazette the regulations. At the last general elections, approval of the Ministry of Environment could not be obtained in time to curtail the noise pollution at that time, which was a nuisance to the public, especially in urban areas. The committee, appointed to deal with this matter was scheduled to meet within the next two weeks to discuss future action to curb noise pollution, Piyasena Dissanayake said.
