Govt to plant 7.58 crore saplings this year

The Chhattisgarh Government has set a target of planting 7.58 crore saplings of different species under “Harier Chhattisgarh Abhiyan” (Green Chhattisgarh Campaign) in the State this year. Chief Minister Raman Singh while chairing a meeting here did not hide his displeasure with the industrial organisations for not completing their target for planting saplings given last year and also warned that now they would not have the freedom to plant saplings on their own.Now, the industrial organisations would have to deposit the amount prescribed by the State Government to the State Forest Development Corporation for planting of saplings, said Singh and added that this apart, the Chief Secretary himself would now hold meetings every three months and review its progress. The Chief Ministere said that industrial organisations have the social responsibility of making the environment pollution free.Singh also asked senior officers of Forest department to take the ‘Green Chhattisgarh Campaign’ seriously and to ensure better care of saplings to be planted under the campaign.He said any kind of carelessness at any level would not be tolerated. Singh stressed on making the State greener for creating a healthy environment. The objective of ‘Hariher Chhattisgarh Abhiyan’ should be to create jobs and a permanent source of income for people. He declared a target to plant 20 lakh saplings during the next four years to enhance greening of Naya Raipur region. The Chief Minister reviewed the preparations made under the ‘Harier Chhattisgarh Abhiyan’ by industrial units and Government departments in the State. Last year, 15 industrial organisations had been given target to plant saplings in 460 km long areas. However, in the meeting, the Forest department in a presentation said that these organisations had planted saplings in only 20-km areas.Against the target of 50 km, the Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) had planted saplings in 10 km only and Labharj Cement planted 10 km area against the target of 20 km, it stated. Chief Secretary Vivek Dhand, Additional Chief Secretary, Home and Transport Department NK Aswal, Principal Secretary Housing and Environment Department N Baijendra Kumar, Principal Secretary Forest Amitabh Jain, Principal Secretary Panchayat and Rural Development Department MK Raut, Secretary, School Education Dinesh Shrivastava, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest AK Singh and senior officers from forest and other departments were present in the meeting.
