Special Assistant to Chief Adviser for Power and Emergency Dr M Tamim yesterday said the government would seek 100 million US dollar from the Asian Development Bank for overall checkup of Titas gas field, where a well went off following a blowout. The Titas gas field, located in Brahmanbaria, is the largest in the country, which produces about 450 million cubic feet (mmcs) of gas per day. He disclosed the plan to journalists after a meeting with Petrobangla officials at the energy ministry. The officials made a presentation on the overall situation of the gas field that has been experiencing problem with well No-3. The gas well has been closed for last few months since it suffered a blowout in December 2006. Last year, a Canadian expert team advised closing down the problem-ridden gas well. Petrobangla has tried to do a thorough checkup of the gas field, but their effort was not successful due to fund shortages. Dr Tamim said the government has opened discussion with ADB to arrange funds from the donors. "The Titas gas field needs a thorough checkup to identify if there is any problem in other gas wells too,' he said. He further said the government has a plan to drill four new gas wells in the Titas field.
