BY MUKESH RANJAN Intending to further increase its political stock among the rural masses, the government is considering hiking allocations to the schemes which are being implemented at the village level. The rural development ministry is working on three Cabinet draft notes to increase allocations to the Swarnjayanti Gramin Swarojgar Yojna (SGSY), Pradhanmantri Gramin Sarak Yojana (PGSY) and Nirmal Gram Yojana (NGY). Informing about the government's proposal, rural development minister Raghuvansh Prasad Singh said, "Given the success we have achieved in implementing SGSY, we are proposing to increase allocation to the scheme by approximately 50 per cent." The proposed hike will require an additional Rs 1,000 crores as the present allocation in the Budget for the year 2008-09 is fixed at Rs 2,150 crores. Knowing the political impact which the ruling UPA coalition could derive in its favour by providing better infrastructure at the village level, the ministry is also considering to jack up allocation to rural roads from the present Rs 11,000 crores to Rs 15,000 crores.
