Greater Noida: The conflict between the residents of Ghori Bachhera village and Noida police and administration, seems to have blown over after a team of farmers met UP cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh in New Delhi on Tuesday evening. The Ghori Bachhera representatives reportedly agreed to a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for each of the five deceased who were killed in the police firing recently. This is, significantly, the first official admission that five farmers were killed in the confrontation of August 13, rather than the four the police had initially claimed. According to UP government's official spokesman in Delhi T S Rana, "The delegation of about a dozen farmers, who met Singh, also agreed to being given some 200 to 300 square yards of land to put up busts of farmers who died in the police action. Besides, the entire cost of medical treatment of the injured would be borne by Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA).' All cases registered against farmers, for alleged murders of policemen, violence and arson, among other counts, are also being withdrawn, said Rana. Asked about the amount of compensation to be paid to farmers for the land acquired, which was the main issue to begin with, the spokesman said, "Farmers will be given the best feasible amounts as exgratia payment, because officially increasing the compensation might bring up other major issues.' Also present at the meeting were UP minister for intermediate education Jaiveer Singh and GNIDA chairman Lalit Srivastava. lalit.kumar@timesgroup.com
