Environment activists on Monday met Municipal Commissioner Praveensinh Pardeshi to protest against the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) proposal of constructing more flyovers in the city, saying that these flyovers do not help improve the overall traffic situation and therefore urged the civic body to withdraw the proposal. The voluntary organisations, which registered their protest include Save Pune Forum, Parisar, Janwani and Pedestrians First. The memorandum said: "The PMC has tabled the proposal to appoint consultant for six flyovers to improve traffic situation in Pune. However, this does not improve the traffic situation in the city, as it fails to address the basic reason for the worsening traffic situation. The lack of efficient public transport system is the reason for the rapid growth of private vehicles. Constructing flyovers only encourages the growth of personal motorized vehicles leading to more congestion, pollution and making the traffic situation further worse. That is the reason why these flyovers get congested in just 2-3yeas. Moreover, flyovers cannot be built everywhere else in the city, so in other parts of the city, the traffic congestion continues to worsen even in short run.' It further mentions: "Instead of building flyovers, PMC needs to focus on sustainable solutions to traffic situation by strengthening public transport system in the city, making it safe and pleasant to walk and cycle and introducing strong disincentives to personal motorised vehicles. The delegation of activists called upon the PMC commissioner and chairman of the standing committee Shyam Deshpande to drop the idea of flyovers and instead use the money to buy more public transport buses and build cycle tracks and footpaths.' The meeting was followed by a rally from PMC main building to Sancheti Hospital chowk.
