Green-backed NZ govt redfaced over African timber

Opposition MPs accused the Green-supported New Zealand government yesterday of using timber from endangered African rainforests in a NZ$40 million ($17 million) refurbishment of its own offices. Pouncing on the government's apparent inconsistency, they noted that the centre-left Labour/Alliance minority coalition had banned logging of New Zealand's own forests. Parliament Speaker Jonathan Hunt, a Labour/Alliance member, told the New Zealand Press Association (NZPA) that panels using the African timber already installed in parliament's executive wing were being ripped out following the criticism.
