In the search for more energy efficient, environmentally friendly vehicles, billions of research dollars are being invested to develop once futuristic technologies such as hydrogen-powered fuel cells and turbine/electric "hybrids". The search is proving fruitful. Within 10 years, technologies that were once used mainly in space programs could find application in a new generation of affordable cars with near zero emissions and impressive performance. The shift to these "green machines" won't happen overnight.
