The Union Environment and Forest Ministry has mooted appointment of "green guards" in every village of the country to protect forests with the participation of the people. The Environment Minister, Mr. Suresh Prabhu, disclosing this during an informal chat with presspersons, said there was a need to launch a national movement to save forests and increase the forest cover, which had dwindled to 19 per cent of the total land mass.
