Why US auto makers are seeing red over a new law on green cars Going green is some- thing US auto makers will have to get used to. As per the new Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards passed by the House of Representatives in the Congress, every car in the country must do at least 35 miles per gallon (mpg) by 2020, up from the existing average of 27 mpg. This means, more money has to be spent on green technologies. Companies such as Ford and General Motors say they will have to pass this cost on to the customer. So production of sports utility vehicles, V-8 powered cars and full-sized pick up trucks
