Pinakini Express between Vijayawada and Chennai has been fitted with newly-built environment-friendly toilets. The train with these new toilets was flagged off on Friday at Vijayawada. According to the South Central Railways(SCR) officials, the new toilets which are manufactured at the Integral Coach Factory, Perambur, are fitted to all the 24 coaches of Pinakini Express and this is the first train in the SCR with environment-friendly toilets or better known as green toilets. The SCR spent an amount of Rs 1.15 crore to introduce this new facility in Pinakini express. A stainless steel retention tank of 45 ltrs capacity has been connected to the coach toilet bowl and fitted to the coach under-frame with inlet and outlet valves. The toilet discharge takes place only when the speed of the train is 30 kmph and above. The arrangement will help in maintaining hygienic environment in stations since no toilet discharge takes place. The system also provides pressurised water for flushing the toilets and it consumes only 1.5 to 2 ltrs. of water for each flush.
