While a green building concept is catching up in the country in a big way, the Odisha Government is making a move to erect eco-friendly towers in the capital city Bhubaneswar, which would house various offices of the State Government.
A massive tower of 30,000 square metres (SQM) is coming up at Unit-V with a cost of Rs124 crore, for which Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has given green signal.
The project, which would be completed in two years, would be a signature complex with a lot of green cover in an area of eight acres. The Department of Works has undertaken the first phase of the ambitious project, which aims to cover 90,000 SQM in three phases.
Tenders have been finalised and a leading construction group, Gammon India, has taken up the turnkey job, said an official.
In the first phase, construction of 30,000 SQM would be indertaken in the area opposite to the Heads of the Department Building, which is housing various Government offices in an unplanned manner without adequate amenities like canteens, toilets and proper parking.
There are 50 asbestos-roof buildings and 16 RCC roof buildings, which would be demolished to allow new modern tower with a green touch. A three-star green-rated building would use minimum energy and it would cause least damage to the environment, said a senior official involved in the project.
There would be all amenities for conferences, canteens, toilets, lifts, etc, and the building would be earthquake-resistant having firefighting apparatus along with lightning arrester.
There would be huge parking facilities both at the basement and level parking to accommodate vehicles in a large numbers, which are now parked on the roadside, resulting in congestion and road blockade.
The construction work would be taken up with modern technology and innovative architectural designs, said the official.
