Green Tribunal asks Centre to come with replies in case against big dams

The Kolkata National Green Tribunal on Monday asked the Ministry of Environment and Forest to come with its replies to the queries raised by the Assam Public Works (APW) in its case against big dams on August 6 this year when the case will be heard again.
The hearing of the case against big dams, according to a press release, was heard on Monday for the first time after it had been transferred to the Kolkata bench of the National Green Tribunal comprising Justice P Jyotimani and PC Mishra. Earlier the case was with the Delhi bench of the National Green Tribunal.
According to sources, following a request from the petitioner’s advocate, the court asked the petitioner to fill some more additional affidavits before August 6 this year regarding all reports related to the construction of the dam. The reports are (1) technical expert committee (TEC) reports, (2) Trust for Nature’s report about June 2013 Uttarakhand Catastrophic, (3) role of the Pseudo ROR power projects dams, (4) study of dolphins report, (5) Thatta Reddy committee report, (6) stay of construction works of the dam till disposal of the petition, (7) the report of the Ambassador extraordinary & plenipotentiary committee of the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by Nations Unies Droits Del’Homme and United Nationals Human Rights etc.
The APW hopes that the court will give justice to fishes, dolphins, river and the people.
The Brahmaputra is also the home to the Gangetic dolphins that fall in the Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Sanjay Upadhyay, Vikram Rajkhowa and Puja Karla were the advocates of the petitioner.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court will hear the NRC/voter list on August 4 next.
