The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has announced a fine of Rs 1 lakh on those found polluting Beas river and its tributaries, Kullu deputy commissioner Rakesh Kanwar said in a meeting with other district officials on Thursday.
Kanwar said NGT orders would be enforced strictly and violators would be penalised without any compromise. "All concerned officers have been directed to keep a strict watch on pollution in Beas. All nagar parishads and nagar panchayats have also been asked to prepare an action plan in this regard within 15 days," he said.
If somebody is caught dumping garbage, sewage or polluting Beas river and its tributaries, Rs 1 lakh fine would be collected from the person as compensation, Kanwar said. Meanwhile, he requested non-government organisations (NGOs) to educate people in this regard.
