PANJIM: The controversial Curlies Restaurant and Night Club at Anjuna, has been directed to stop operations with immediate effect by Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).
The Board, in its order issued on Thursday, revoked the Consent to Operate granted under The Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 and The Air (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1981 to the restaurant.
“The consent to operate order dated March 03, 2016 issued by the Board to Curlies Restaurant and Bar located at Anjuna shall be revoked forthwith,” states the order issued by GSPCB official Dr Mohan Girap.
National Green Tribunal at Pune had asked GSPCB to revisit the consent given to the shack after social activist Kashinath Shetye had filed a petition against the consent, claiming that the restaurant does not have a valid no objection certificate (NOC) to seek consent under the acts.
The board, during its hearing observed that the NOC provided by the shack for obtaining the consent was invalid.
“The NOC was dating back to the year 2014-15, while the consent to operate was sought for the year 2016 onwards,” the board sources stated. NGT, while disposing the petition filed by Shetye, had asked the Board to decide on the matter.
Curlies, a popular tourist place in Anjuna, was in the news after the owner Edwin Nunes was arrested on August 16 under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act and later released. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had also suspended the restaurant licence after it was found to be operating in unhygienic conditions. This was revoked within a week.
