Large and expanding human and livestock populations and largescale poverty exert unrelenting pressure on forests. In view of the severe degradation of India's forest resources, the government has attempted to cut down losses to its forests and increase tree cover through series of programmes: social forestry, joint forest management. Thus, Indian forest management has now entered a stage of transition, moving from conventional "state controlled forest management" to "decentralised community forest management ".
