Hailstorm kills one, damages crops

A farmer was killed in Austagram upazila in Kishoreganj district as hailstorm hit the district on Tuesday evening. Hailstorm in Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah district caused serious damage to crops and mango buds. Nobi Hossain, 55, of Deoghar village of Alinagar union of the upazila, was working at his Boro paddy field in the haor area when hailstorm hit, leaving him dead on the spot, reports our Kishoreganj correspondent. The hailstorm that hit Pakundia, Austragram, Mitamoin, Hossainpur and Nikli upazilas also caused serious damage to crops including oil seeds, pulse and potato fields, Kishoreganj Agriculture Extension Department sources said. Our Jhenidah Correspondent adds: A hailstorm yesterday noon caused serious damage to crops including pulses, wheat, betel leaf and buds of the mango trees in Kaliganj upazila in Jhenidah district. As it hailed heavily for 10 minutes, the roads, thatched roofs and the plain lands got covered with snow. Kaliganj Upazila Agriculture Officer Imdad Hossain Sheikh said they fear the serious hailstorm will damage some 40% of the pulses, wheat, betel leaf and bud of mango trees in the upazila.
