Hardcore GLA cadre arrested on charges of poaching

From our Correspondent MANGALDAI, September 14: Several militant outfits operating in the state being unable to continue their extortion drive has diverted their target on the poaching of the highly endangered species of one horned rhinos only to strengthen their fund and this has been come to the light following the arrest of Arjun Chetry alias Bhai the poacher turned hard core cadre of Gorkha Liberation Army (GLA) at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on Saturday morning. The dreaded militant was arrested by a team of Mangaldai Wildlife Division and Dalgaon police with assistance from Dhekiajuli police station and one AK 47 rifle, 25 rounds of ammunition, 2 nos of Magazines, one Italy made sophisticated Pistol of 7.65 mm along with 6 rounds of ammunitions and one loaded magazine were recovered from his possession. Though Sukumar Momin Divisional Forest Officer, Mangaldai Wildlife Division had the information of his identity as a hard core poacher which led to his arrest in a well planned operation with the personal initiative and active co operation of Imdadul Hussain Bora Superintendent of Police, Darrang but this arrested poacher had come to Dhekiajuli from Dimapur with duel purpose of poaching in Orang National Park taking shelter in the fringe area of the Park and to organize their activities in certain areas of Udalguri and Dhekiajuli. According to his confession made before the police during the course of interrogation, he was deputed by Prem Kumar Chamling the self styled Commander of GLA to undertake organizational activities here. He also divulged that at present a total number of about 200 cadres of the GLA have been undergoing training under their Commander somewhere near Dhansiri area in Golaghat district and a group of DHD has been extending all support and shelter to this outfit. However, he denied having any knowledge about any relation of GLA with the ULFA.Significantly, according to police record, the arrested Arjun Chetry is one of the prime name accused person in the killing of Amar Bahadur Bist the Village Head Man (Gaon Burha) of village Naharigaon under Missamari police station in Sonitpur district. The Gaon Burha was shot dead on July 21 last as he opposed the extortion drive launched by the GLA cadres led by Arjun Chetry. In this connection the Missamari police had registered a case vide No.40/80 under section 302/34 IPC read with section 27 (i)(a) of Arms Act. A case of extortion has also reportedly been registered at Thelamara Police Station in Sonitpur district for his involvement in extortion there. Besides a case registered at Dalgaon Police Station in Darrang district (Case No. 180/08 under section 27/31/51 of Wildlife (Protection) Act read with section 25(i)(a) of Arms Act), The Dhekiajuli Police meanwhile has booked Arjun Chetry in connection with Case No. 290/08 under section 120(B) of IPC read with section 25 (i)(a)and (i)(b) of Arms Act.
