That Haryana presented a cash surplus Budget of Rs 1,400 crore on Tuesday should not come as a surprise. Because this Jat land means business and reaps rich dividends in all its enterprises. From an agrarian state, Haryana has become a smart business hub, taking advantage of its geographical location next to the national capital. Now, it exports 50 per cent of the cars manufactured on its soil besides sending 20 per cent motorcycles made here across the international borders. After providing home to the leading software companies over the past one decade, it has started exporting its software -- 10 per cent of the software developed here is sent abroad. With Maruti acquiring 100 acres more in Gurgaon for developing its diesel engine, the number of cars manufactured here is set to increase tremendously. The Government has achieved a number of operational synergies with the Canadian automotive industry as Magna, the world leading tier automotive supplier, has set up its first manufacturing plant at Manesar in Gurgaon in collaboration with Lumax. The company plans to set up another unit for manufacturing parts of automatic transmission with Amtek Forge. While the state has shown interest in collaborating with other Canadian firms in Ontario, which specialise in the area of transmission, distribution and power losses, it has been wooing Canadian firms to invest in food and dairy processing. The state is also trying to have educational agreements with Canadian universities and utilise the combined knowledge -- with inputs from Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar -- for the betterment of the food processing industry. The thrust is in the fields of nano technology, agri-biotechnology and information technology. The Kundli-Manesar-Palwal (KMP) Expressway, considered the backbone of the state economy, spells new hope. Since this expressway would touch all the major towns of the National Capital Region (NCR), the Haryana Government plans to raise massive residential and industrial facilities alongside it. While four townships are to be constructed by the Haryana Urban Development Authority, the Haryana Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation plans to develop two industrial townships alongside the expressway. The Government has approved a gems and jewel park and is contemplating many other proposals for shopping complexes alongside this road aka Western Periphery Expressway. The Reliance Special Economic Zone (SEZ), too, will have an opening on this road. The company has already achieved Central approval for one SEZ whereas the nod to the other one is awaited. Significantly, Haryana has received a maximum of 72 proposals for setting up SEZs, with the majority of them vying to set up their facilities in the NCR. A number of multinational companies have set up their units in Haryana: Siemens, ABB, Suzuki, GE, Honda, Nestle, Smithkline Beecham, Mitsubishi, JCB, Coca Cola, Pepsi, IBM, Alcatel, Perfetti, Barco, Norcool, Nerolac, Baxter India, Johnson Mathey and Denso. Many more are in line to set up their shop here. The state has more than 1,000 industrial units with foreign technical or financial collaborations. Besides, 13 units have come up with technical and foreign collaboration with Canadian companies, having an FDI of Rs 259 million. Exports from the state have exceeded Rs 250 billion, and Haryana has become the largest producer of sanitary ware and blankets.
