Haryana Power Generation Corporation Limited (HPGCL) has offered two probable sites to Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). While one of the sites is in Balsamand area of district Hisar, the other is in Kitlana-Nimiriwali-Ajitpur area of district Bhiwani.
A spokesman of HPGCL said that a team of NPCIL and HPGCL officers would visit these sites on June 23 and 24 to assess their suitability for setting up of the second nuclear power plant. He said that Nalinish Nagaich, executive director of NPCIL, has informed that during the visit, NPCIL team wished to collect certain details regarding availability of water, cropping pattern, power evacuation arrangements and distance from nearest railway head in order to proceed further.
He said during December 2010, HPGCL carried out a preliminary survey of these sites and found them suitable for being recommended to the NPCIL. He said land owners of village Balsamand, through their panchayat, submitted a memorandum to Haryana CM in April expressing willingness to sell around 18,000 acres for setting up a power project so as to ensure the development of village and the surrounding areas.
While referring to the background details, he said NPCIL was already in the process of acquisition of land for setting-up the first nuclear power plant in Haryana at Gorakhpur in district Fatehabad. During August 2010, the NPCIL had expressed willingness to set up another nuclear plant in Haryana in view of the pro-active response of the state in execution of preliminary activities relating to Gorakhpur project.
Considering the deficit power scenario in the state in the years to come, Haryana government in March had approved the proposal for setting up of the second nuclear power plant in the state.
Referring to the safety aspects, he said during April 2011 also, a team of senior officers of NPCIL Mumbai headed by K B Dixit, executive director, NPCIL had visited Panchkula to launch an awareness drive to highlight the benefits and safety aspects of nuclear power plants in wake of the Fukushima nuclear incident. During a presentation, the NPCIL had emphasised that such situation could never be faced in India as there was difference between the two nations.
