Haze alert

  • 27/05/1999

It is getting uncomfartably warm again. Forests are burning across Southeast Asia, threatening to send a new blanket of haze across the region. In the past two months, "hot spots" have been identified on Sumatra and Kalimantan and Sarawak on Borneo. During the 1997 fire season, five million hectares of forest, brush and farmland in Indonesia went up in smoke, sending choking clouds of smog across neighboring nations. They harmed health, devastated tourism and inflicted losses. (editorial)
