Chennai, THE Madras High Court on Tuesday directed the Chennai Corporation to ensure that no solid waste was dumped in the Pallikaranai marshland. The First Bench comprising Chief Justice A K Ganguly and Justice F M Ibrahim Kalifulla granted the injunction while passing interim orders on a public interest writ petition of California Software Company Limited. In its petition, the company contended that the garbage dumping yard was situated next to its building, an IT Park. Everyday, thousands of tonnes of garbage and plastics were dumped and burnt continuously . The TN Pollution Control Board, while underscoring the need to protect the marshland for its rare flora and fauna, ground water recharging potential and ecological importance, had banned dumping of waste and discharge of sewerage and industrial effluents into the ecologically important marshland, in June 2006. The government issued a notification on August 9, 2008 declaring the marshland as a reserve forest. However, despite all this, dumping and burning of garbage continued till date, petitioner contended.
