The Delhi High Court today reserved its orders on a bunch of petitions filed by environmentalists challenging the construction of the 2010 Commonwealth Games village site on the banks of river Yamuna. The court reserved its order after hearing the petitioners' ecological concerns over the construction of the Games village for the international sports event and a Metro corridor on the river banks. A Division Bench of Justice A K Sikri and Justice Rekha Sharma, who even visited the site during the hearing, wound up the proceedings after the counsel for one of the petitioners, Vinod Kumar Jain, completed arguments in the case. Earlier, the counsel for Center, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), DDA and Yamuna committee had completed their submissions. The petitioners alleged that the Delhi government as well as the central government had failed to preserve the river banks. By allowing DDA and DMRC to go ahead with their project works on the river bank, the government violated reports filed by the experts committee on environment. The construction of permanent structures on the riverbed would adversely affect the ecological system including the flood plain area would loose ground water purifying potential, the petition said.
