HC seeks answers from govt on water shortages

Looks like the State Government needs High Court to remind it that one of its duties is to ensure that the people in Goa get adequate unpolluted drinking water. And, the right to get unpolluted drinking water falls within the ambit of right to life. Taking notice of the news report published in Herald on May 29, "Panjim taps run dry for second day,' Justice A P Lavande has issued directions to the State Government and the PWD to file an affidavit stating what steps have been taken or it proposes to take , in case of breakdown of the water pipeline in the State, so that there is adequate supply of water to people in the affected areas. The Court pointed out it is right of the people to get clean drinking water and the State Government is duty bound to see that people get adequate supply of unpolluted water. The news report published in the paper had highlighted how water supply to Panjim was snapped on account of breakdown of pipeline and resultantly, taps went dry. To make matters worse, while the pipeline of Opa was being repaired another stretch at Carambolim had snapped thus affecting the supply for Panjim.
