Central Mumbai will still retain its cityscape dotted with chimneys of the erstwhile textile mills, at least for a while. In an order that will bring cheer to conservation activists, the Bombay high court stayed the demolition of 23 heritage structures on 15 private and one stateowned mill premises in the city. The order comes a month after the court had similarly restrained the National Textile Corporation (NTC) from demolishing 77 heritage structures in 15 of its mills. Hearing a petition by the Indian National Trust for Architecture and Cultural Heritage (Intach) to protect the heritage mill structures, a division bench of Justice H L Gokhale and Justice S R Dongaonkar emphasised the need to "retain and protect such structures''. The heritage structures in these premises include 11 chimneys, six ponds, one clock tower and five buildings of heritage and architectural value.
