Dec 31, Colombo: Medical doctors in Sri Lanka's state sector have called on the health authorities to pay more attention to the increasing number of kidney disease patients in the country. The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) said the Health Ministry needs to focus more on the increasing number of patients suffering from kidney disease. GMOA Spokesperson Dr. Navin de Soysa told the media that the Ministry should establish a special unit to deal only with kidney disease and take the required measures to address the situation. GMOA has presented a 12-step programme to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on addressing the kidney disease and made a proposal for the National Science Foundation to launch another research on the cause for the kidney disease in Sri Lanka, which would cost Rs. 350 million. The GMOA asked for the funds to be allocated to the Non Communicable Disease Unit of the Health Ministry and to bring the entire operation under the Unit.
